Vasse Felix was the first winery to be built in the Margaret River. Owned and operated by the Holmes Court family since 1987,Vasse Felix has undergone extensive changes and expansion. Chief winemaker Virginia Willcock energised the winemaking and viticultural team with her no-nonsense approach and fierce commitment to quality. The estate vineyards contribute all but a small part of the annual production, and are scrupulously managed, quality the sole driver. Wines include top of the range Heytesbury (a Cabernet blend) and Heytesbury Chardonnay; the Estate range of varietal wines; Classic Dry White and Dry Red; Filius Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot, and Theatre White and Red. Limited quantities of specialty wines include Cane Cut Semillon, Viognier and Tempranillo. JAMES HALLIDAY

The most successful chardonnay cuvée from this producer, at least in this vintage. All Gingin clone, the regional stalwart. At times, straight renditions can be so intensely flavored that they are hard to drink. In this instance, however, there is ample pastry dough, peach and cream accents that serve to sublimate the sour acidity into a more integrated whole. The scintillating length is unimpeachable. In all honesty, in pure drinking pleasure terms, I like this every bit as much as the Heytesbury. It¿s so exotic, so cool, so (attractively) reductive, so thoroughly washed with nectarine and citrus, so wild with assorted floral characters. This is what single plot/vineyard/site wines are all about.
