Based in the Montlouis appellation in Loire Valley, France, Xavier Weisskopf of Rocher des Violettes farms chenin blanc from sacred old vine sites. Since taking over in 2005, he immediately converted the site over to organics re-invigorating the vineyards with a view to protect an incredible legacy of the historic vines he had just purchased. The old vineyard was called Le Rocher Violette with the old cellar nestled in the tuffeau stone.

There is no doubt the talent and hard work Xavier has displayed is paying off. The wines are beautiful renditions reflecting their sites and skilful winemaking. He is known locally as the |little genius¿ with a reputation for perfection in all that he does and that can be seen in every wine from the bottom up. 

This comes from a wide ranging age of vines between 5 - 129 years old on silty clay over limestone from the sites; Bel-Air, La Rochère, Le Grand Poirier and Les Borderies.

¿Made from Cot, the local name for malbec there's an ebullient lift to the nose of maraschino cherries, violets and fragrant blackberries with hints of black pepper thanks to the inclusion of whole bunches. A framework of tannins envelopes the intense core of dark berries with an undertow of savoury minerality to support. This is handsomely structured and will repay cellar time, though it's appealing and delicious from the outset. GABRIELLE POY
