Style: Rich & Round
The smallest village in Macon and technically part of the Macon-Cruzille appellation is the tiny hamlet of Grevilly, population 35. There's one producer, Alexis de Benoist, a descendant of one of the original power figures of the Macon region. Standing at about 6'4 and resembling an unmade bed, he lives alone with his donkey, his dog and horses in the original family home. He's awkward but charming and an immensely passionate wine man. He's spent his early years working around the globe, including stints in Australia, the US and at Bollinger. He does everything solo, from vineyard work to winemaking and marketing, although the latter has now largely been ceded to his impressive agent, Anne.
All the wines are beautifully made, contained and possessed of excellent balance. The clay and limestone soils give you richness and texture across the palate while the limestone dials in finesse and lovely drying austerity.
As white Burgundy seems to move inexorably out of the price point of mere mortals it's wine like this that will fill the void for many of us.
Golden colour. Deep and honeyed, grilled cashew and white flower aromatic. Fruit spectrum dances around the orchard and something slightly more exotic with a puff of white smoke putting a complexing note into the conversation. The palate follows suits with a lovely attack of sweet citrus and melon fruits spreading across the palate before a blast of limestone-linked austerity and tension pulls everything back into line. It's a wine I just loved drinking. you get Macon generosity and enjoyment alongside enough tension on the backend to keep you wanting another glass. This guys is a "watch-this-space" producer.
