As Jeb Dunnuck puts it Stephane Ogier's Rhone estate is "Unquestionably, one of the most exciting domaines in the world of wine today". That's no hyperbole.
What Stephane is doing with Syrah from prime plots in Cote Rotie and beyond is something to behold and it is sending tremors through a region which has been dominated by a handful of monolithic estates for as long as I can remember. The fruit comes from a steep, granite hillside a stones throw from Cote Rotie's southern border. It's venerated territory and Ogier has shown that in the right hands, it is capable of producing wines that could slide north across the appellation border undetected. It goes against all my urges to say this but it's quite fair to call Ogier's La Rosine a "Baby Cote Rotie", but I would go even beyond that to say that this is a wine on par with many offerings further north. How he manages to deliver a wine of this quality at this price is astonishing. Ogier has made huge investments in time and capital at this wonderful estate which has seen the already excellent quality improve even further while the wine-making, nuanced and subtle, has set itself apart from many in the region. This philosophy is applied across all of the wines the domain produces, they offer some of best you will see in either the southern or northern rhone.
Opens with citrus-infused stone fruits, apricot kernel, a little mineral/stony crunch, and a touch of wild mint just floating around in the background. Lovely focus to the tightly coiled fruit with clean white peach and that same apricot kernel on the finish. Nice balance with clean lines and nice delineation between all the components while coming together beautifully as a whole. On form in 2021 for sure.
