Winemaker Mario Olivero has revitalised this historic estate, his intense and polished Piedmontese wines are hard to resist. Located in the hills between Asti and Alba, Marchesi Alfieri is one of the most impressive estates in Piedmont, boasting its own castle atop the highest point in the village of San Martino Alfieri and commanding views over the surrounding countryside and their vines. The wines are fresh and lively with great depth and penetration. La Tota is up there with the best of Barbera which is up there with my favourite wines to actually drink. By that I mean, drink, not talk about but drink. With friends, food, family. The 2019 is cooler, brighter and snappier than the last few years. It hits a lighter blue fruit and tart red berry spectrum with plenty of lift and perfume to the aromatics. Cool, fresh, long and plump in the mouth. There is the volume Mario seems to capture every year but it's a little more reigned in, more of a lively feel. Spanking. Delicious!
