In 1997, the DAnna family decided to establish a vineyard on the property that had been in the family since 1960. The vineyards (chardonnay, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, pinot gris, merlot and pinot blanc) are hand-pruned and hand-harvested. A 300-tonne, split-level winery was completed in 2003. Son Franco is the viticulturist and winemaker; he started to work in the family liquor store at 13, graduating to chief wine buyer by the time he was 21, then completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Melbourne University before studying viticulture at CSU. A vintage at Coldstream Hills, then consulting help from Peter Dredge of Red Edge and Mario Marson (ex Mount Mary), has put an old head on young shoulders. JAMES HALLIDAY, The Australian Wine Companion
