One of the most successful family wineries, a humble operation for the first 110 years of its life that has grown out of all recognition over the past 40 years. In 2003 it cleared the decks by selling its Long Flat range of wines for an eight-figure sum, allowing it to focus on its premium, super-premium and ultra-premium wines: Vat 1 Semillon is one of the most dominant wines in the Australian show system, and Vat 47 Chardonnay is one of the pacesetters for this variety. It has an awesome portfolio of single vineyard Semillons released when 5-6 years old. Its estate plantings are over 116ha in the Hunter Valley, 15ha in the Limestone Coast and 26ha in Heathcote. JAMES HALLIDAY

Our Vat 1 Semillon is only ever made using fruit from our best old-vine, dry-grown vineyards. The centrepiece is always our Short Flat vineyard, where the oldest plantings date back to 1923. The soil profile in this dry-grown vineyard is unlike that of any of our other vineyards, providing the Vat 1 with its amazing length and depth of fruit. The 2017 Vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant the vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested. With lifted lime citrus aromas the palate is seamless, showing the typical powerful fruit core which is balanced by the wine¿s texture and soft acid profile.
