There are three champagne houses named Heidsieck, all from families once related, and Charles is the smallest and the best of them. With an annual production of just half a million bottles, Charles Heidsieck is made alongside the larger Piper Heidsieck. The two houses admirably uphold distinctly unique styles, thanks to their insightful and talented chef de cave, Regis Camus, who has focused the vision of both houses for 22 years. TYSON STELZER

The base wine is equal parts pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier from the 2007 vintage, and 40% reserve wine is added prior to the wine being bottled for its second fermentation. The reserve wine has an average age of 10 years, so after three years on lees prior to disgorgement the Brut Reserve has an average age of just under six years. Aromas of brioche, almond and peach, the palate has great length and complexity, the youthful base wine's freshness contrasting with the velvety creamy nuances of the Reserve. JAMES HALLIDAY
