The Right Suit: Decoding Dress Codes for Men

From black-tie to cocktail, semi-formal and beyond, discover how to match every dress code with ease.

What Do Dress Codes Mean?

Most events, if not all, come with a dress code. Dress codes are a way to encourage a cohesive look for guests, help to match the tone, theme or mood of the event, and best of all, provide peace of mind by telling you what to wear. Most dress codes for men will match the season or the venue itself, for example, you can always look to the wedding venue for some guidance on attire.

However, if your recent invitation has left you scratching your head, here is our easy-to-follow guide to the most common dress codes for men.

When The Dress Code Is Casual

Level of Formality: Casual yet smart.

Definition: For this event, wear chinos and a shirt.

What to wear to a casual event: As far as dress codes go, a casual dress code is the most relaxed, however, this does not mean showing up in pyjamas or whatever you find lying around (unless the dress code is “red-carpet Adam Sandler”). For this dress code, keep it relaxed and smart. Chinos and a shirt will be your best friend. Sneakers can be worn, but only if they’re in a pristine condition.

When The Dress Code Is Cocktail

Level of Formality: Medium-high.

Definition: For a cocktail dress code, lean into more relaxed suiting options like chinos and less formal shirts. Interestingly, the cocktail dress code was created to bridge the gap between casual daywear and eveningwear. You’ll want to look casual yet polished, although steer clear of jeans or sneakers.

What to wear to a cocktail dress code: For a cocktail dress code, you can (metaphorically) let your hair down a little. Men’s cocktail dress code has a much higher tolerance for more “fun” colours, but dark colours are the norm for these kinds of outings. Why not experiment with a mix of colours, and levels of formality, and don’t be afraid to explore mismatch-suiting options? For shoes, opt for a lace-up shoe or, if it suits, a polished loafer.

When The Dress Code Is Formal

Level of Formality: High.

Definition: For this event, most people will stick to a traditional suit.

What to wear to a Formal Event:
On the classic dress code scale, a formal dress code takes second place to black tie, which means you’re not required to wear a full tuxedo, but you will need to at least wear a suit and a collared shirt. A classic suit in navy, grey, or black paired with a crisp white shirt is a timeless choice for formal occasions, but don’t be afraid to add on a splash of personality with a bold tie or a distinctive pocket square.

When The Dress Code Is Black Tie

Level of Formality: High.

Definition: Black Tie denotes the wearing of a tuxedo. Black tie is the most common dress code. Most award ceremonies, galas, and some weddings are black tie occasions.

What to wear to a Black Tie Event: For this dress code, a black tuxedo with a classic peak lapel will always suit. Most black tie events will require a bowtie, although you may see some people opting for a straight necktie. Tradition states that your shirt should have French cuffs, but barrel cuffs are also acceptable. A French cuff shirt features a length of fabric that is folded back upon itself and fastened with cufflinks, whereas a barrel cuff is held in place with a button. Pair black dress socks with shoes that are polished and dark in colour.
